Electromagnetic Wall Torques from Magnetically Confined Plasmas
نویسنده
چکیده
A direct method to measure the localized magnetic shear stress and hence electromagnetic torque or force exerted on a wall by a fluctuating magnetic field is presented. A model of the wall is needed when the magnetic measurements do not include the normal component. Explicit formulas for thin and thick walls are given. Estimates of the force in illustrative Alcator C-Mod tokamak plasmas provide evidence against the theory that resistive magnetic drag determines mode locking.

Magnetically Induced Plasma Rotation
The extensively studied and controversial question about the origin of the observed fast rotation for magnetically confined plasmas, in particular theta pinches, is briefly reviewed. It is shown that standard MHD equations predict the experimentally observed rotation. The effect is interpreted as a form of the Einstein-de Haas effect. The generally accepted continuum plasma reasoning which deni...
متن کاملElectromagnetic-Wave Transmittance Characteristics in One-Dimensional Plasma Photonic Crystals
Transmittance of electromagnetic waves with normal incidence in one-dimensional plasma photonic crystals is studied numerically based on the invariant imbedding method. Wave transmittance as a function of wave frequency shows the appearance of forbidden band gaps, which are conspicuous in photonic crystals. We also demonstrate that the small modification of plasma photonic crystal leads to diff...

Introduction The plasma-wall transition problem is relevant to most areas of plasma physics. In magnetically confined fusion devices, charged particles in the plasma edge can erode the wall, thus reducing the lifetime of the components facing the plasma. Energetic particles hitting the wall may deteriorate the quality of the plasma confinement, because high-Z impurities are released from the wa...
متن کاملMicrostability of magnetically confined electron-positron plasmas.
It is shown that magnetically confined electron-positron plasmas can enjoy remarkable stability properties. Many of the microinstabilities driving turbulence and transport in electron-ion plasmas are absent if the density is so low that the Debye length is significantly larger than the gyroradius. In some magnetic configurations, almost complete linear stability may be attainable in large parts...
متن کاملIntermittency and turbulence in a magnetically confined fusion plasma
We investigate the intermittency of magnetic turbulence as measured in reversed field pinch plasmas. We show that the probability distribution functions of magnetic field differences are not scale invariant; that is, the wings of these functions are more important at the smallest scales, a classical signature of intermittency. We show that scaling laws appear also in a region very close to the ...
